The novel depicts the bitter reality of society. The main concept of Kankar is Domestic violence. It is the story of Haidar and Sara. Haidar is a typical man for him beating his wife is not a big deal. Haider, who gave Sara everything except respect. First, he used to abuse her, and then he started beating her.
Sara was a sensible girl. She left his house and the person she later married did not have anything, but he respected her. She did not compromise on honour and did very well. Sara was a brave woman. Haider never accepted his mistake until his own son raised his hand over his wife and at that time Haider thought about how wrong he was with Sara and what he lost. But you can’t leave the novel in between because Umera Ahmed knows to bind the readers with her magic words.
Junaid was looking at his father with his hand on his simple cheek, he did not expect what had happened, but the answer was coming, it was not even in his imagination. His father was crying like a child, repeating only one sentence. “Don’t ever kill Farah, don’t ever kill him” Then his father suddenly got up and left the room. , it was a strange Pandora’s box that had appeared before him, he did not understand his mother’s mutterings or his father’s condition. Both reactions were surprising to him and perhaps not only to him.
He was in a situation, more than he asked something to his mother. She left the room, now he, Farah and her two sisters were left in the drawing room, the four of them sat around the dining table looking at each other. And then They had started breakfast with great impudence but no one wanted to have breakfast.
There are lessons that most of the women in our society are not so brave, so they endure the beating and abuse of a person all their life. Thinking that he will get better, but people never change. If someone does this for the first time, we may call it a mistake.
But if such mistakes are repeatedly forgiven, they become a habit. A lot of depth could be written on this topic, but Umera has only covered the surface in this book, probably because it is her very old writing, which she probably wrote in her early days. Let’s explore after reading the novel. It is a very compelling story that engages the reader until the very end. Umera Ahmed’s writing style is captivating, and she spins a novel plot that keeps the reader engaged.
